Ingrown hairs are the single biggest reason clients switch to sugaring, and it's worth knowing exactly why the technique works so well against them, both for your own confidence at the couch and for explaining it to clients who ask.
Hair removed by waxing is pulled against the direction of growth. That can snap hairs below the skin's surface and distort the follicle, the exact combination that sends regrowth sideways instead of up and out. Sideways growth trapped under skin is, in a nutshell, an ingrown hair.
Sugaring works the opposite way. Paste is applied against the direction of growth and removed with it, following the natural line of the follicle rather than fighting it. Hair comes out cleaner, at the root, and the follicle isn't wrenched out of shape in the process. Fewer distorted follicles means fewer hairs with nowhere to go but sideways.
Your own technique matters just as much as the direction principle. Because paste only grips dead skin cells and hair, not living skin, working a section correctly means you're not repeatedly dragging over the same patch of skin the way can happen with wax. Less trauma to the skin barrier means less inflammation, and inflammation is one of the main triggers for ingrown hairs in the first place. It's worth checking your own hand technique periodically against this: are you working each section once, cleanly, or going back over skin that's already been treated?
None of this means ingrown hairs vanish for every client overnight. Hair type, skin type and aftercare all play a part, and clients switching from years of shaving or waxing usually see the biggest improvement over two or three cycles, once the growth pattern has had a chance to reset. Setting that expectation upfront, rather than promising instant results, tends to keep clients patient enough to get there.
It's genuinely useful to explain the mechanism in a consultation. Most clients have never heard the mechanical reason sugaring helps, and a clear explanation does more for booking confidence than a general "it's gentler" line ever will. The aftercare advice worth pairing with this is covered in a separate guide.
We formulate every product in the Radeq Lab range with a prebiotic base, designed to support the skin's own microbiome between appointments, one more thing worth mentioning when a client asks what's different about what you're using on them.
